We will be dissecting The Feast of Unleavened Bread. We will be breaking down the literal and the spiritual meaning behind this amazing feast. Many don’t see the significance of observing this feast today. We will be breaking down the true meaning and how it must be put in the minds of believers today in order to have a better understanding of the work of the Spirit in us.
First I would like to point out that this feast is directly connected to the killing of the Passover. Let’s first see why this point is true. The reckoning of a day is Evening and Morning. The creation week in Genesis teaches that Father has set the structure of the day being Evening and Morning and not Morning and Evening.
Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Now let’s look at when they were to kill the Passover.
Exo 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
This would seem like they killed the lamb at sunset but if we will look closely we will see its not so. The phrase “in the evening” is two words. These Hebrew words are Bane and Ereb which means “Between the evenings”. If the structure of a day is evening and Morning, that would mean that between the evenings would have been somewhere between the beginning of the day of the 14th and the night of the 15th. Deuteronomy 16 shows us more detailed as to when the Passover was killed.
Deu 16:6 But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.
Deu 16:7 And thou shalt roast and eat it in the place which the LORD thy God shall choose: and thou shalt turn in the morning, and go unto thy tents.
Deu 16:8 Six days thou shalt eat unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work therein.
The scripture shows that the Passover was killed as the sun was going down. This tells us the time of day they prepared the Passover which was right before the evening of the 15th of abib. The Passover was roasted and eaten with unleavened bread then as we see in verse 8 of Deuteronomy 16, there were then 6 more days of unleavened bread AFTER they have eaten the Passover. Showing us that the first day of unleavened bread is when Israel ate the Passover lamb.
We also see confirmation in the Gospels, which shows us that the son of God kept this ordinance exactly the way its written in the Torah.
Mat 26:17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
Mat 26:19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
Mat 26:20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
Mat 26:21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
Mar 14:12 And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?
Mar 14:16 And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
Mar 14:17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
Mar 14:18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
Luk 22:1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
This is a very important part to the meaning of the Feast of unleavened bread. This means that the first thing that must be acknowledged is the receiving of the Lamb of God in the believer’s life. The first day of unleavened bread was the 15th of abib, lets see the significance of this date.
Exo 12:42 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.
The night Israel ate the Passover was the night they received deliverance from Egypt. In our previous study about Passover, we discussed the meaning of Egypt or House of bondage. We will be brushing over that truth but if you have not already read the article on the Passover. I suggest you read that first (Passover), then come back to this study.
Egypt signified the bondage to sin that we all experience before meeting Messiah.
Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members (body).
Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
We see that we need deliverance from sin but when we receive the Lamb of God we become free.
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Joh_8:36 if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
The meaning of receiving The Lamb on the first day of unleavened bread is showing us that the day we receive the Lamb of God we are delivered from sin. Now we have to also point out that it is the first day of unleavened bread in which leavened is removed from the bread and also from the house.
Exo 13:6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD.
Exo 13:7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
Leaven is a symbol of sin and we see that we are delivered from sin. Bread represents the understanding of the word. We see then eating unleavened bread means we are receiving pure truth. Leaven bread then represents false doctrine.
Mat 16:6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Mat 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Another ordinance is that there were not to be any leaven found in the homes. The homes represent the heart as well as the lifestyle. In 1st Corinthians chapter 5, there was a man having relations with His Fathers wife. According to the Law of Father it says,
Lev 20:11 And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
This is a serious offence but the man was not repentant.
1Co 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
1Co 5:2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
In this chapter, Paul refers to this lifestyle practice as leaven.
1Co 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
1Co 5:8 therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
1Co 5:9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
There is a emphasis in verse 7 showing us that Messiah is our Passover therefore we are free from leaven and should REMOVE the leaven from among the HOUSE of God which is the people. Paul also mentions KEEPING the Feast but not with old leaven or with the old sinful lifestyle. We know this Feast is referring to a gathering because Paul then says not to keep company with openly sinning people and not even to eat with them during this feast of unleavened bread.
1Co 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
All this is to teach us that Father is purging us from sin and removing sin from our lives and even from among His people. Father asks us to partake in this judgment.
1Co 5:12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
1Co 5:13 But them that are without (The World) God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
This feast teaches us the importance of purity and importance not breaking Fathers commands. We also see that father desires us to be careful and to help keep His people pure as well. This type of Judgment does not mean to condemn but rather making a decision not to allow wickedness in our presence as a holy people.
Let’s take a step back and look at the elements we dissected so far.
The Passover was eaten on the 1st day of unleavened bread which means when we receive the Lamb of God in our lives and we are delivered from Egypt or Sin. Leaven means sinful life and false doctrine and both are removed from our Lives as the Spirit cleanses us from all known sin and teach pure truth symbolized in the eating of unleavened bread. We are not only to remove sin from our life but also from among the people of God. One important symbol we have not explained is the importance of 7 days. First let’s clear up an unknown fact. The 7 day instruction for unleavened bread was specifically for when the people were settled in one place and not wandering the wilderness.
Exo 13:4 This day came ye out in the month Abib.
Exo 13:5 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.
Exo 13:6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD.
This shows us the only feast they kept was Passover which is the 1st day of unleavened bread on the 15th of Abib. This is why Father told them after Egypt to observe THAT NIGHT.
Exo 12:42 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.
The instruction for the 7 days is very important also. The reason they did not keep the 7 days is because they were under a reproach which is symbolized by their wandering the wilderness.
Jos 5:6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
Jos 5:7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.
Jos 5:8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
Jos 5:9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
Jos 5:10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
Jos 5:11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.
Now that they were purified of all the Leaven among the people in Israel, Father removed their shame and they were able to prepare the Passover on the 14th and keep the night of the 15th of Abib. They were able to receive Father promise of Land in order to go through their purification process.
Now the number 7 is very important. It symbolizes complete purity, Totality and perfection. Let’s see a few examples of Father doing things 7 times as completing or perfecting something.
Completion
Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Gen 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Purification
2Ki 5:10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.
2Ki 5:14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
Psa_12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Victory
Jos 6:15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.
Jos 6:16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.
We see scripture reveals the importance of the number 7. We have a feast of 7 days of NO Leaven in our Homes, 7 days of NO Leaven in our bread and 7 days of reflection of Deliverance from sin. This is because Father is trying to COMPLETELY PURIFY US and gives us COMPLETE VICTORY over ALL sin. The 7days shows not only completion but also a process. We are completely delivered from all known sin and error in our lives from the moment we receive the Lamb. This is symbolized by the 15th of Abib or the 1st day of unleavened bread when the Passover was eaten. The 7 days signify a process of perfection in the word which we are told the Spirit will lead us into ALL TRUTH. The 7 days also points to a process of removal of all sin from our lives or sanctification.
This Feast is revealing to us the work Father and His Son is doing in our lives everyday and to be reminded of this process every year is imperative because we are in need of this work. The people of God are prone to forgetting and this is why Father has given us these beautiful reminders yearly to keep us sober minded and humbled before our Father in Heaven.
