There is much confusion as to who is the one true God of Scripture. Some say its one individual projecting or manifesting Himself in three different people. Some say it's three different individuals who all co existed before the beginning of time and work together as a team called God. I see that if we stay close to scripture and scripture alone, we will see clearly the identity and individuality of God. We will first start by looking at a verse in Deuteronomy 6 verse 4 which states,
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
This verse proclaims that there is only one God to the people of God. Jesus also proclaimed this idea as He preached. He did not say He was the God in that verse. Let’s see what Jesus says about this verse. Mark chapter 12 verses 28 to 34 states,
And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no men after that durst ask him any question.
We see that Jesus answered the scribe and informed Him of the scripture which points to the only God the Hebrews acknowledged. The scribe confirmed Jesus statement by saying yes there is one God and NO ONE ELSE. This scribe was not saying in anyway that Jesus was God but that the God of Israel which was in Heaven was the only God. Jesus confirms His statement with a praise saying the Kingdom of God is not Far from this man.
Paul also confirmed that there is one God and identifies Him while expressing the same idea in Deuteronomy 6:4. In 1st Corinthians chapter 8 verse 4 to 6 it states,
Paul also confirmed that there is one God and identifies Him while expressing the same idea in Deuteronomy 6:4. In 1st Corinthians chapter 8 verse 4 to 6 it states,
As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
In verse 4 Paul speaks about the idols many worship in the world and then emphasizes on the Fact that there exist no other God but one which is what is stated in Deuteronomy 6:4. Now we see Paul getting more specific to who this one God is, we see in verse 6, Paul tells us that the Father is the ONE TRUE GOD and Jesus is our Lord or master. This idea is very important to understand. Jesus Himself identifies a distinction between Himself and the one true God. Jesus says in John 14 verse 1,
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In this verse Jesus references God as being someone other than Himself. Also in John 17 verse 3 He says,
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
This verse is quite clear, as to who is the one true God and who is the one whom He sent. Jesus Himself is praying to His Father and refers to Him as THE ONLY TRUE God. This shows that This ONLY God sent HIM to the earth. This sentiment is also made in John 3 verse 16 which many quote by memory. It says,
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
There are many more scriptures which clearly show that there is a distinction between God and His Son. The Scripture reveals that there is ONE TRUE GOD and He gave His Son. This God is The Father. He is the only God of the Bible.
Many people wonder about John chapter 1 verse 1 which says the word was God. In order to understand this verse we must first understand what the word god actually means.
Many know the Hebrew term for God which is Elohim. This word is a Plural instinctive singular meaning. This means that this word is magnifying the description of the subject. Elohim is used in many different ways, such as Judge, Angel, Divine nature, mighty one, false god and ONE TRUE GOD. We will see in scripture that it is used for judge in 1 Samuel 2 verse 25 which says,

We will see in scripture that it is used for judge in 1 Samuel 2 verse 25 which says,
If one man sin against another, the judge (Elohim) shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall in treat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.
Its also used for angels as seen in Psalms 8 verse 5 which says,
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels (Elohim), and hast crowned him with glory and honor.
And false gods in 1 Kings 11 verse 5 which says,
For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess (Elohim) of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
We also notice that when the context is referring to Elohim as plural the translation is also plural. God is a singular term if it was plural it would be Gods. Now lets go back to john chapter 1 verse 1 to 3.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Notice that it mentions the word “beginning” twice in the 1st and 2nd verse. Verse 2 and 3 is referring to the beginning of creation. But verse one is referring to the beginning of the existence of the word (learn more about this idea in the study called “Why Jesus is called the only begotten son of God”). Now we also notice in verse 1 it is Identifying God and there is no need to say whom it is because it is a common understanding that this is the Father. So God is identifying the Father and then it says, “And the word WAS God”. This portion of the verse used the word God to describe what type of entity the word is. It was not identifying Him as God but describing the nature of the word as God. Let us allow Jesus to explain this idea in John chapter 10 verses 31 to 38.
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him
We see here Jesus says that the Jews wanted to stone for something that scriptures says WE ought to be. He mentions that the law or word of God referred to Gods people as Gods. Lets see the verse Jesus is quoting from in order to get more understanding on what He meant. Psalms 82 verse 6 which says,
I have said, Ye are gods(Elohim); and all of you are children of the most High.
Jesus was saying that they were condemning Him for being in nature what the people were supposed to be. The term God here is referring to the nature of Gods Children. Gods Children were to be Gods, meaning have the divine nature. He also says that He is the son of God and they say He blasphemed but in Psalms 82:6 it says WE are Gods (Elohim) because we are Sons or children of the most High. We are born of God and receive the divine nature as mentioned in 2nd Peter chapter 1 verses 3 and 4.
Therefore in John chapter 1 which states the word is God is simply describing the nature of the word. A better way of putting john 1 verse 1 is “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God (the Father) and the word was God (Divine). Now that we understand the use of the word God and Elohim we can move forward with showing that Scriptures reveal that the ONLY TRUE GOD is the Father only (John 17:3). Now 1st Timothy chapter 2 verse 5 states,
Therefore in John chapter 1 which states the word is God is simply describing the nature of the word. Now 1st Timothy chapter 2 verse 5 states,
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
This verse is clear as to who God is and that there is ONE mediator between God and man and that is Jesus Christ. Now lets look at the description of the one true God and see how that alone can also reveal and identify who the only true God is.
One of the many descriptions of God is that He is invisible. Jesus was clearly visible even after His resurrection. Also in 1 timothy chapter 6 verses 15 to 16 which says,
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Here we see that God dwells in light that NO MAN CAN APPROACH or can see. Here is an interesting description but we have Christ expressing this same sentiment in John 5 verses 3,
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
Also john 1 verse 18 says,
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
It is clear that though no man has or can see God at anytime, Jesus has been visible to declare and proclaim to the world who the Father or the ONE TRUE GOD is. There is a clear revelation on who God is identified in scripture. There is one more clear explanation which shows that the Father is the Only True God but has exalted His son to have His authority for a time. First all orders are given from the Father to the son which shows that the Father is greater in position. We see this in Revelation Chapter 1 verse 1 which states,
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
Here we can clearly see that the Son receives everything including revelation from His Father. Then The Father gives it to us by His Son or at times by His angels.
Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
Here in John chapter 14 verse 28, Jesus Himself says that he goes to His father BECAUSE HIS FATHER IS GREATER. Jesus also mentions authority and judgement was GIVEN TO HIM. Jesus is quite clear. Jesus never claimed to have this authority and power of Himself but to have received it from His Father.
Jn 5 vs. 19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
Jn 5 vs. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
Jn 5 vs. 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
This shows that everything Jesus did was because God was helping or doing the works through Jesus. We see this in 2 Corinthians 5:19
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
It shows here that GOD was IN Christ bringing the world to HIMSELF. This verse is the context of Colossians 2:9 which says, "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."
This shows the fullness of God was in Christ. Showing that Christ is not God but the Son of God.
Now our final breakdown verse will show what will occur after judgment and when everything is over and the new earth has been formed and the punishment of the wicked has passed. Let’s turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verses 24 to 28 which says,
This shows the fullness of God was in Christ. Showing that Christ is not God but the Son of God.
Now our final breakdown verse will show what will occur after judgment and when everything is over and the new earth has been formed and the punishment of the wicked has passed. Let’s turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verses 24 to 28 which says,
Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
These verses are quite clear and seen throughout scripture. There will be a time when the authority and power GIVEN to the son will be given back to GOD. When the Son of God conquers all things then He will give everything back to the Father and Jesus Himself will become SUBJECT so God the Father will be the ONLY TRUE GOD and authority in the universe.
